AEO Checklist: How to Optimize Content for Answer Engines
A 17-point AEO checklist for SaaS teams covering AI crawler access, JavaScript rendering, answer-ready pages, and how to measure AI citations.

In a Nutshell
An AEO checklist is a set of technical, content, and measurement checks that decide whether answer engines like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot can reach your pages, understand them, and quote them. For B2B SaaS, the costliest AEO failures tend to be technical, such as a CDN setting that blocks AI crawlers, a pricing page that renders blank to bots that skip JavaScript, or a robots.txt rule aimed at the wrong OpenAI bot. Fix crawler access first, then structure pages around the sub-questions buyers ask, put pricing and documentation where crawlers can read them, and measure with Bing's AI Performance report and GA4's AI Assistant channel.
You know the AEO basics by now. If you don't, our SEO vs AEO vs GEO breakdown covers them. This checklist covers the layer underneath, the checks that decide whether an answer engine can read your page at all and whether you'd ever find out it quoted you.
AEO Checklist for AI Crawler Access
Allow the AI search bots by name
AI companies run separate crawlers for separate jobs. OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot builds the index behind ChatGPT search, GPTBot collects training data, and ChatGPT-User fetches a page when someone asks ChatGPT to open it. Anthropic mirrors this with Claude-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, and Claude-User, and Perplexity uses PerplexityBot.
The costly mistake is blocking the wrong one. According to OpenAI's crawler documentation, sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot won't appear in ChatGPT search answers, while disallowing GPTBot only opts you out of training. Plenty of robots.txt files still run on 2023-era "block the AI bots" advice written before OAI-SearchBot existed. Changes take around 24 hours to reach OpenAI's search systems, so don't panic-test five minutes after deploying.
Google keeps it to one bot. AI Overviews and AI Mode use regular Googlebot, so the Google-Extended token has no effect on them.

Audit your CDN and firewall bot settings
robots.txt states your intent, but your CDN and firewall decide who gets through. Since July 2025, Cloudflare blocks AI crawlers by default on new domains, and Vercel offers a one-click "Block AI Bots" firewall rule. Somebody on your team may have switched one on during a security review and told nobody, which is the most SaaS thing that could possibly happen.
Check your CDN's AI crawler settings, then confirm in your server logs that OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, and PerplexityBot are getting 200 responses and not 403s.
Test key pages with JavaScript turned off
Googlebot renders JavaScript. The crawlers behind ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity don't. When Vercel and MERJ analysed AI crawler traffic, GPTBot made 569 million requests across Vercel's network in a month, and none of the major AI crawlers executed JavaScript. GPTBot downloads the JavaScript files anyway and never runs them, which feels personal if you're on the frontend team.
The usual SaaS casualties are pricing tables loaded from an API, tabbed feature comparisons, and FAQ accordions that fetch answers on click. Run curl -A "GPTBot" https://yoursite.com/pricing or disable JavaScript in Chrome DevTools and reload. If your plan names and prices disappear, so do you. Server-side render anything you want quoted.
Check snippet controls on every template
Google's nosnippet, max-snippet, and data-nosnippet directives apply to AI Overviews, AI Mode, and featured snippets alike, and a page must be snippet-eligible to appear as a supporting link in Google's AI features. These tags often end up on templates for reasons nobody remembers. Search your page source for all three. A max-snippet:50 on your blog template caps every answer Google can lift from you at 50 characters, which is shorter than this sentence.
Verify Bing Webmaster Tools and turn on IndexNow
Bing's index powers Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI answers, and Bing Webmaster Tools is currently the only first-party dashboard showing AI citations. Verify your site, submit your sitemap, and enable IndexNow so new and updated URLs reach Bing the moment they change.
AEO Checklist for Answer-Ready Content
Map the fan-out sub-questions for every money query
Google confirmed in its May 2026 guide to generative AI features that AI Overviews and AI Mode use query fan-out, splitting one question into several hidden sub-searches. A buyer asking for "the best SOC 2 compliance software for a 20-person startup" triggers searches about pricing, audit timelines, integrations, and alternatives, and citations come from those sub-searches. You can rank first for the head term and still go uncited.
These sub-questions show zero volume in keyword tools, because a model generates them and keyword tools only count what humans type. Pull them from sales calls, support tickets, and demo questions, and give each one a clear section or page.
Open every section with a sentence that survives on its own
A passage that starts with "It also integrates with..." means nothing once an answer engine lifts it. Name the subject in the first sentence under every heading. For concept pages, define the term, its category, and its function in one line, as in "SOC 2 Type II is an audit report that tests whether a company's security controls worked over a period of three to twelve months."
Test it by pasting the first two sentences under any H2 into a blank document. If a stranger can follow them, they're extractable.
Format answers for featured snippets and AI Overviews
Write the direct answer in two or three sentences right under the heading. Use HTML ordered lists for steps and HTML tables for comparisons and pricing tiers, because extraction works on markup. That beautifully designed comparison PNG your designer made is, as far as ChatGPT is concerned, a blank rectangle with alt text.
Attach a source to every number and claim
In the 2024 Princeton study that introduced the term GEO, adding statistics and quotations raised content's visibility in generative answers by roughly 30 to 40 percent on the researchers' benchmark. The test used a simulated engine, so treat the figure as directional. Name the source inside the sentence, such as "according to Gartner's 2026 survey," because footnotes get dropped during extraction.
Keep visible dates and dateModified honest
Show a visible "last updated" date, match it to the dateModified value in your Article schema, and change it only when the content changes. Google's guidance on byline dates warns against artificial freshening, and a 2026 date on a page that still describes 2023 fools nobody.
AEO Checklist for SaaS Commercial Pages
Publish pricing in crawlable HTML
When a buyer asks ChatGPT what your tool costs and your pricing page says "Contact sales," the answer engine keeps looking. It finds a three-year-old review, a Reddit guess, or a competitor's comparison page that has helpfully estimated your price for you. Publish starting prices or ranges, explain what moves the price (seats, usage, add-ons), and keep plan details in text.
Build comparison pages that admit trade-offs
"[Your tool] vs [competitor]" and "[competitor] alternatives" queries are prime fan-out territory. Answer engines cross-check claims across sources, so a page where you win every row reads as an ad and gets weighted like one. Include a section on when the buyer should pick the competitor. It makes everything else on the page more believable.
Open your docs and help center to crawlers
Questions like "does [tool] support SCIM provisioning" get answered from documentation, and plenty of SaaS docs sit behind a login, a noindex tag, or a JavaScript help widget. Make public docs crawlable and give each integration its own page. If you sell to developers, add an llms.txt file to your docs, since coding agents like Cursor and Claude Code look for it.
Fix your review and directory listings
Answer engines build their picture of your product from sources you don't control, and review platforms and directories sit near the top of that pile. Make sure your category, features, integrations, and pricing on G2, Capterra, and other listings match your website. Our list of SaaS directories worth your money covers which ones to prioritise.
AEO Checklist for Measuring AI Visibility
Open Bing's AI Performance report
Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in February 2026. It shows how often Copilot and Bing's AI answers cite your pages, which pages get cited, and the grounding queries behind those citations. The grounding queries are the most useful part, since they reveal which sub-questions you already win. Google folds AI Overviews and AI Mode data into the regular Search Console report with no way to separate it, so don't spend an afternoon looking for the filter.
Set a baseline in GA4's AI Assistant channel
Since May 2026, GA4 has a native AI Assistant channel that labels sessions from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and other recognised assistants. Treat it as a floor, because mobile app clicks often arrive without a referrer and land in Direct, and AI Overviews clicks count as Google organic. Add a "How did you hear about us?" field to your demo form to catch the rest.
Run a fixed prompt set every month
Write 20 to 30 prompts your buyers would ask, such as "best X for Y," "X vs Y," and "how much does X cost," and run the same set in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot every month. Log whether you're mentioned, whether you're linked, and who gets cited instead of you. Answers vary between runs, so judge the three-month trend and ignore one bad Tuesday.
AEO Tactics to Skip This Year
Skip llms.txt for Google Search
Google's May 2026 guide says Google Search doesn't use llms.txt, and no major AI assistant has confirmed reading it when building answers. Meanwhile, Google's Chrome team added an llms.txt check to Lighthouse, so Google ignores the file and audits you for not having it. Keep it for developer docs and skip it everywhere else.
Skip chunking pages and rewriting for robots
Google says you don't need to break content into tiny pieces or rewrite pages in an AI-friendly style, because its systems can find the relevant section of a long page. Self-contained section openers and clean HTML do the job.
Skip FAQ schema for the dropdowns
Since August 2023, Google has shown FAQ rich results only for authoritative government and health websites. Keep the schema if you have it, but the FAQ content on the page is what gets read and quoted.

FAQs
What is an AEO checklist? An AEO checklist is a list of technical, content, and measurement checks that help a website get quoted by answer engines such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. It covers crawler access, JavaScript rendering, answer-ready page structure, commercial pages like pricing and comparisons, and tracking AI citations and referral traffic.
How do I check if ChatGPT can crawl my website? Confirm that robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, the crawler behind ChatGPT search, and that your CDN or firewall isn't blocking AI bots. Then fetch a key page with curl -A "GPTBot" https://yoursite.com/pricing to see the raw HTML a bot receives, since OpenAI's crawlers don't execute JavaScript.
Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search? Blocking GPTBot does not remove a site from ChatGPT search. GPTBot collects training data, while OAI-SearchBot builds the ChatGPT search index, and OpenAI treats the two independently. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is what removes a site from ChatGPT search answers.
How do I optimize content for featured snippets and AI Overviews at the same time? Write a direct two-to-three sentence answer under each heading, name the subject in the first sentence, and use HTML lists for steps and HTML tables for comparisons. Make sure your pages don't carry nosnippet or a low max-snippet value, because Google applies those controls to featured snippets and AI Overviews alike.
How do I track traffic and citations from AI answer engines? Use Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report for Copilot citation data and GA4's AI Assistant channel for sessions referred by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Both undercount, so add a self-reported attribution field to demo forms and run a fixed set of buyer prompts across AI tools every month.
Do I need llms.txt for AEO? An llms.txt file is not needed for AEO on Google, which states that Google Search doesn't use it. It is worth adding to developer documentation, because AI coding agents look for it when reading docs.
Answer engine optimization breaks most often at the access layer. A firewall setting, a misread robots.txt rule, or a JavaScript-rendered pricing table can make a well-ranked SaaS site invisible to ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, so the first job is making sure every AI search bot can read your pages as plain HTML. After that, build sections around the sub-questions buyers ask, publish pricing and documentation where crawlers can reach them, keep third-party listings consistent with your site, and measure with the first-party AI data that now exists. Keewee, a B2B SaaS marketing agency, can help you win at AEO and bring in leads for your business organically.
